When I taught sailing to incarcerated gang kids, I hammered home the same lesson in every class: The best way to handle trouble is to avoid it. How do you fight a fire? Don't let it get started. How do you handle bad weather? Stay home. How do you avoid a fight? Walk away. However, when you have to fight a fire, handle bad weather, or fight a fight you can't walk away from, be prepared. The irony lies in the fact that both avoiding trouble and being prepared to handle it begin with the same thing: Situational awareness.

The same applies to driving & defensive driving - situational awareness. It often provides opportunity to manuever out of harm's way better than slamming on the brakes. It definitely applies to armed/potentially armed people.
