Don't get me started on tipping. Pay your wait staff minimum wage or higher and if they do a good job, the tip they receive is just icing on the cake. Why we depend on strangers to cover the salary of your employees is beyond me. Sorry, had a soapbox moment there. Tipping aside, I'm sure what the Brits are doing here pales in comparison to what Americans have done in ports. Nice to know that people aren't that different after all though.

But since the custom in America *is* to tip.... don't skimp! Waitstaff are doing their job, yes, but that job STILL involves providing a service to you. If they do an average job, give them an average tip - they still deserves thanks for providing service. If they do a great job, give them a great tip.

Then again, I believe in tipping my hair cutter, the person who details my car, the valet, the guy at the PX who brings my 125" TV out to my Smart car, then somehow figures out how to make it fit, my lawn guy, etc - if they give me good service.

SFC Casey O'Mally - I typically tip 20% if the service was good. I understand the importance of tipping in our society, I just disagree with it. I worked as a dish washer in college and the wait staff would give us and the cooks part of their tips on most nights. So I even tip something for bad service if the plates and utensils were clean in hopes that the dishwasher will get some cut of it.

So wait staff is one thing. I understand them not making minimum wage and all. But, I RARELY tip for things where I'm already paying you full price for it (like haircuts). Funny story: We were recently on vacation and went to some crazy milkshake place where I paid $55 for 4 milkshakes that we had to wait 45 minutes to get. They had the audacity to ask for a tip on top of that when I paid. Sorry, but despite them being pretty and tasty, $55 milkshakes don't get tips in my book.

We learned our skills at misbehaving in port from the Brits.

I liked it when the Brits came in to Norfolk/Hampton Roads. Their ships always had a rugby team and they would play us (Virginia Beach Falcons) and it was awesome and fun. Then we would go to the social and raise hell, but luckily it was all confined to the inside of one bar that knew to expect that behavior.
