Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Are Necessities in U.S. Military

I can tell you that when I was being shot at in Iraq, the main thing going through my mind was that I hoped my platoon had enough Marines that adequately represented the minority groups within the US population.
When calling for close air support, I forced myself to inquire as to which underrepresented group the person flying the F18 belonged to and whether or not they felt that they had been discriminated against during his/hers/zims/zers training evolution during their pre-deployment work-up.
I felt my white privilege come to the forefront when my radio operator called in the medivac for my driver and my gunner after striking our 3rd IED in 4 months. I ordered him to make sure that there were no underprivileged persons in need of medical care anywhere in our AO that might feel that they were being pushed to the side in favor of the 2 white, heterosexual males getting put on a helicopter for transport to medical care.
I also had my corpsman ensure that the level of care he was providing was consistent with the care that he would provide to others, especially within the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.

After all of that was figured out, we went and killed the bad guys that were still hanging around.
