Death toll from Maui fire climbs to 93, becoming deadliest in modern U.S. history

A devastating wildfire that tore though parts of Maui and destroyed much of the historic town of Lahaina has killed at least 93, officials said Saturday evening, making it the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century.

Rescue teams continue to search for survivors in Maui as officials begin to assess the emergency response. Meanwhile, firefighters are still working to contain three separate wildfires on the Hawaiian island.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said Saturday afternoon that hundreds of people were still unaccounted for and he expected the number of dead to increase.

"We want to brace people for that," Green said. The governor added that the road to recovery would be a long one.
