Monty's foot-dragging around Caen really slowed down the invasion's progress.

Typical Montgomery. His dilly dallying around Caen set the entire invasion back weeks. While it's true he faced stiff opposition, his reluctance to lose troops in a full frontal assault would cost him men in the long run. His rep from the Desert Campaign had already begun to fade after Sicily, now it was even further eroded by this fiasco. It was finally put to rest after the "The Bridge Too Far" and the huge waste of time and material to cross the Rhine after Patton and others had already done it.
A great leader for his time, but his time had past.
