On July 6, 1775, one day after restating their fidelity to King George III and wishing him “a long and prosperous reign” in the Olive Branch Petition, Congress sets “forth the causes and necessity of their taking up arms” against British authority in the American colonies. The declaration also proclaimed their preference “to die free men rather than live as slaves.”

I cannot fathom the quandary they were in. The King hadn't treated the colonies harshly however Parliament did and yet the King didn't take action to help the colonies. IMHO is why, even though they were vastly outnumbered, there were so many Loyalists.

They were asking/protesting in 1775 with the promise of taking up arms.
A year later they were prepared to deal with the consequences and told the King the colonies were no longer his.
“to die free men rather than live as slaves.” Uh huh . . . while enslaving people. No doubt many recognized the hypocrisy of that - the economic dependence on slavery, cruelty of denial of equal humanity . . . or the Civil War would not have manifested less than a century later.
