Chinook Indian Nation members rally for federal recognition

Members of the Chinook Indian Nation rallied Monday on the steps of a federal building in Seattle to raise awareness for their long fight to get federal recognition.
Chairman Tony Johnson, whose tribal name is Naschio, said his great-great-grandfather and other leaders first hired lawyers to sue for their lands back in the 1890s.
Federal recognition would mean access to federal dollars for healthcare and housing for this group of tribes, which are based in Southwestern Washington, particularly Pacific County. The rally was the start of a campaign by Chinook leadership, they said, to pressure Washington Senator Patty Murray and Senator Maria Cantwell to use their influence in Congress to get the Chinook recognized.

We have a college baseball team in the Northwoods League out of Concordia University in Mequon, WI that is called the Chinooks. No need to worry though, they are politically correct. The symbol of the team is a fish

The Chinook Nation already has specific Federal Recognition, however certain "Tribes" were excluded in that recognition, such as the SW Washington/NW Oregon Coastal Tribes and have been fighting for their own recognition. The separate Tribes almost pulled it off about 15-20 years ago in a Congressional vote, but guess who led the fight, along with one high-powered specific Oregon State Senator voting no, to prevent them from becoming their own Nation? That's right, the Chinook Nation, who didn't want to lose any of the lands, privileges and gambling income from the Coastal Tribes.
