I was privileged to met Captain McGonagle when he too was a customer at a tire shop in Cathedral City, CA in ? 1995, the license plate on his car read: ‘Congressional Medal of Honor’!

CSM Charles Hayden - One of My Lts in C-School had just Reported Aboard. Like any Young CTSN at the time reporting aboard He had been assigned to the Mess Decks. Needless to say He had a Hell of an Induction. He wrote the most extensive book about the attack and used the Pictures He Took of that Nightmare. The Picture that sticks in My Mind is Capt McGonagle in Capt's Chair Pants Cut Most the way Away Field Dressing on His Leg Looking Pretty Ragged on a Shot Up Bridge. Lt Told Me Injured as the Skipper was He Chased Him Off His Bridge. Truly an Iconic Picture Fried Into My Brain.
