A whole lot of folks self-medicate with intoxicants of all sorts. Will substance abuse exacerbate mental problems? Absolutely. Does it cause those mental problems? Therein lies the question.

Then there is this. https://www.cpr.org/2019/03/19/daily-marijuana-use-and-highly-potent-weed-linked-to-psychosis/ I became aware of THC psychosis shortly after Colorado legalized weed. Stores were selling very high content THC. People would come in to Colorado, buy say marijuana laced brownies. They would eat a couple, then smoke some and end up in a psychotic episode.

LTC Kevin B. - I agree, it is not simple and the drug abuse, mental illness nexus leads to so many problems. Homelessness, crime, prostitution drug net works etc. To say one causes the other is a tremendous over reach. Focusing on mental health will help but isn’t the total solution.
