I met von Stauffenberg's son in Heidelberg. He was a colonel in the German Army and assigned to Central Army Group HQ. He retired as a major general.

It's sounds grim... but the way I see it, the only sound strategy the conspirators could've followed would've been based on placing someone in very close proximity (i.e., Stauffenberg) who would then detonate a shrapnel-creating incendiary point blank... accepting their own life being sacrificed in the effort. I think like anyone, the colonel was hoping to not only succeed... but survive.

Myth busters did a show on it. Just not enough explosive was used. As anal as MI-6 were, they didn’t replicate the room.
