That is interesting CW5 Jack Cardwell that "the Army’s plan for a new squad automatic rifle will bring a type of ammunition combination, from bullet to casing, that’s never seen the battlefield.
Army Lt. Col. Andrew Lunoff, product manager for the service’s small caliber ammunition program, said that the round currently under consideration is the 6.8mm caliber."

IMHO it would be a mistake to create a unique caliber for a weapon that would be issued to all infantry squads. Right now the primary infantry weapons fire 5.56 or 7.62 and .50 caliber [machine gun and sniper rifle].
Introducing a new caliber means new training requirements, for maintainers and shooters alike, new PLL and new weapons cleaning kits, and expansion of ammunition ranges in the ammo bunkers.

Interesting to see how this plays out. I pretty much agree with you but shouldn't stop innovation.

The biggest challenges to successfully implementing military innovations is still stove-piping at the DoD and Service level Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen. Even within the acquisition and requirements communities programs tend to be developed independent - especially when sensitive.
Support function of spares, maintenance and ammunition tend to be underfunded - except for the various "pet" projects each service successfully got through Congress.

6.8 is good stuff. I don't have any personal experience with it but it looks like a winner. I need to get behind something chambered in it. Father's Day and my Birthday are coming up! I take any brand of firearm, BTW! LMAO
