The Oregon Army National Guard was sent a diversity assignment in early 2004 by NGB. That officer was given command of the battalion my MP Company was assigned to. Within months, it was apparent the officer wasn't making the grade but was allowed to stay BC until the minimum time for a successful command was met. This was as repayment to NGB for an officer Oregon had sent sometime previously.
When the officer left command, quite a few things 'left' with them (I think you get my drift). The individual went back to NGB but was technically was on Oregon's books.
Several years later, Oregon got a call from from Iraq about why they'd send an officer there on a request for orders, not actual orders. Oregon told them we sent no one and please fax the RFO to them so they could see what was going on.
The diversity gift NGB had forced on Oregon had forged the G3's signature on the RFO and thought that no one would check as they went to Iraq.
A bigger investigation was launched. Turns out said officer had a BA from a diploma mill and should have never been commissioned. They made LTC before being found out. Had the officer not gone to Iraq, they would possibly have made COL and retired without incident. But thatsnot what they did.
Instead, the person was reduced in rank to their correct enlisted rank, court-martialed, and sentenced to prison.
After all that, they faded into oblivion.
