APOD: 2025 January 6 – Colliding Spiral Galaxies from Webb and Hubble

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for January 6, 2025.
John Herschel first noticed this duo (NGC 2207 and IC 2163) in 1835. As technology improved, Herbert Howe realized in 1898 that IC 2163 was indeed a separate galaxy, Further study suggests that the two are in the process of merging into a single galaxy (in about 1 billion years or so). Both are about 80 million light years away and can be seen in the constellation Canis Major (Big Dog).
Today's APOD is a composite image from the Hubble (visible light) and James Webb (infrared) telescopes (hence the unusual color palette). Both galaxies contain a vast amount of dust and gas, and based on the Webb dataset are beginning to exhibit enhanced rates of star formation.
