APOD: 2024 October 20 – Dark Matter in a Simulated Universe

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the October 20th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). As the days grow shorter and jack-o-lanterns begin to materialize on neighborhood doorsteps, the APOD editors reach back into the 2021 archives for this simulation of our universe where we see visible matter (orange) and dark matter (black) exist together to form what we are able to see.
What is dark matter? It is a hypothetical form of matter that does not interact with light or other electromagnetic radiation, but is implied by observed gravitational effects which cannot be explained unless something more massive is present. Some scientists suggest that dark matter may be made up of as-yet-undiscovered subatomic particles, such as either weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) or Goldstone bosons (I'll leave further definitions of both to your leisure). Another possibility is that dark matter is composed of primordial black holes. Either way, it does create a seasonal web for us to consider. Boo.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price In a bizarre way, the dark matter appears as routes between all forms of objects in the Universe... I find this image fascinating, Bill!

Sgt (Join to see) It poses some thoughts that fascinate me as well. We only "see" the four dimensions we can measure: height, width, depth, and time. Yet we still struggle to explain everything we can "see." Quantum physics tells us that an electron can either spin in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction...another dimension perhaps? How many more are there? This is just one of the paths my mind wanders down when looking at something like today's APOD. Thanks for stopping by.
