APOD: 2024 August 28 – Tulip Nebula and Black Hole Cygnus X 1

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the August 28th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). Both Microquasar Cygnus X-1 and the Tulip Nebula are located in the constellation Cygnus (The Swan). As you can see in today's APOD, it can be a little tricky to locate a black hole; one way is to identify the "shock front" created by jets ejected along the axis of rotation of the black hole itself. Cygnus X-1 is a so-called stellar-mass black hole, a class of black holes that comes from the collapse of a massive star. The black hole pulls material from an adjacent blue companion star toward it. This material forms a disk that rotates around the black hole before falling into it or being redirected away as a jet. Cheers.

Maj William W. "Bill" Price: These are spectacular images that you present to us which appear to be light years away. Out of curiosity, are there any that materialize within a visible distance from earth and, therefore, visible to our naked eyes? If not, what is the reason; astronomical conditions of space where they occur?

SPC Michael Duricko, Ph.D There are some "closer" objects (the Helix Nebula comes to mind). But that is still 650 light years away. I suspect that the same gravitational forces that first caused the Sun to collapse and ignite also produced a significant amount of house cleaning in our small corner of the galaxy. But I think we may be closer to the truth by following your thought regarding "astronomical conditions of space where they occur." Why do things appear a bit more "calm" in our neighborhood? Theologians will offer one answer. I don't know if scientists have found one yet.
