Found this animation that shows how the moon appears to us as it orbits. [Note that I did not say orbits the Earth because one could argue that it doesn't really orbit the Earth but orbits the Sun with the Earth as it never goes into retrograde but is steadily being pulled along with the Earth as the Earth orbits the Sun.] That's splitting hairs and I would say for all practical purposes, it's orbiting the Earth.

It seems odd that the moon getting closer caused the Earth to speed up. Perhaps it's like a figure skater when they pull their arms in while twirling.
