The moon was once thousands of miles farther away than it is now, and Earth's days were 2.2 hours longer, a new study finds.
The extra hours of sunlight, in turn, may have led to oxygenation events that ushered in a period when life's complexity exploded, the study researchers say.
"Daylength changes may influence the distribution of solar energy and temperature gradients, potentially impacting weather systems and atmospheric dynamics," the researchers wrote in the new study, published Aug. 6 in the journal PNAS.

Found this animation that shows how the moon appears to us as it orbits. [Note that I did not say orbits the Earth because one could argue that it doesn't really orbit the Earth but orbits the Sun with the Earth as it never goes into retrograde but is steadily being pulled along with the Earth as the Earth orbits the Sun.] That's splitting hairs and I would say for all practical purposes, it's orbiting the Earth.

It seems odd that the moon getting closer caused the Earth to speed up. Perhaps it's like a figure skater when they pull their arms in while twirling.
