Things were so different back then Brother Dale. Some of the sailors knew they probably weren't handling the armaments the right way, having never been taught. And the white officers in charge knew the right way and the wrong way, but they thought they were so superior to the black sailors that they would just let them learn the hard way, which they still didn't teach them the right way. The mentalities leave a lot to be desired from back then. I thank GOD those days are past us now, for the most part.
