Kids are stupid on motorcycles. They think the acceleration will get them out of any situation they get in to. Lane splitting, which is legal in CA, Is another way to get hurt. Some drivers that see you doing it go into road rage, some just get scared and jerk the wheel when you come out of, seemingly, nowhere. If you happen to live through an accident that should have killed you(December 5th, 1985, Augusta GA) it instills a much greater respect for traffic and your Bike. I still carry the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Card that I had to get while stationed at RSA in the 80s. All it proves is that you can handle your Bike, not that you're really smart enough to be riding it.

Some of the bases were requiring that troops buying Sport Bikes take a course on how to handle one. But you are right, a MFS card is not a brain transplant and I've had both the basic and advanced.
it is my considered opinion that you aren't a competent rider until you get that first 5000 miles under your belt and 10,000 is better yet. I've been back to riding for 20 years now and I still get rusty and have to be careful on the first post winter ride.
