Maj Robert Thornton LOL! Also traded was daughters which was referred to as a "Bride Price." The trade of money or goods in exchange for the right for one of their sons to marry the trader.

Harems were almost all composed of Russian girls from what is now Georgia. Muslims women were off limits (except as actual wives) So one of the things traded, were Russian Dolls - and not the nesting type. Blond hair, blue eyes, were extra valuable.

I knew all six, because I had some good Professors. But once I got a chance to actually see some of the Silk Road...well, "road" isn't the right word. Those folks humped over mountains, thru swamps, deep snow and blistering sands...and they had to protect themselves from not only Bandits, but Rulers who decided to skip the payment part. Amazing.

We lived in Turkey and visited several of the "caravansarai" that were part of the road...not exactly luxurious places to stay with your goods and animals.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - Turkey is amazing...on part is right with us in the 21st century, then you wander up the road five miles, and a guy gives you a ride on his 1932 era tractor and takes you back to the Bible. LOL
