They had no idea what they were getting into. It sounded risky and "romantic" and the sort of thing that appeals to the young.

There were always positions we could volunteer for when I did my tour in Vietnam,usually after some time in the boonies,they offered things like gunner on Hueys,or you could volunteer to join a LRRP team,neither of these interested most of us, but there were those that had that interest in danger and both provided it,admired the hell out them, really some heroic people, Welcome Home Brothers
