The World's — and the Pacific Rim's — Disastrous Population Implosion

I took a population genetics course a long time ago...and these sorts of scenarios are playing out all over the world. One of the reasons that Immigrants are necessary is they replace workers we don't have, and they tend to have larger families. Japan has villages where a baby hasn't been born in two decades. They also weren't able to have their "Naked Man" Ceremony for the first time in Centuries. So this year, they included women. The Math is fairly easy to do, we know how many people were born this year, and the actuarial Scientists are pretty doggone accurate on how many will be alive in 20 years, and how many old people will die. The Question becomes what is the smallest population you can have - and maintain a modern civilization?
