Most hospitals plan for mass casualties. When I worked the ER, many moons ago, we had a major chemical plant fire at night. We started receiving firefighters in respiratory distress. We also had a full ER of other emergency patients. We didn’t follow the book solution, instead we shuttled all firefighters to the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit, where we had the space and the oxygen outlets to treat all the firefighters.
Even with the best plans in place, adaptation is often necessary.

And as a former ER Medic we were highly trained in the science of triage.
