Finally, sailors can put hands in their pockets under policy update

No hands in pockets was an impractical reg (IMHO), but it did offer a quick visual indicator of a unit's discipline and morale. A Soldier who would blow off something inane will surely blow off more difficult tasks. Just an observation from my fighting position

One of my first drill weekends in the field, even before going to Basic Training, was at Camp Roberts in California, in the winter. Must've been in the low 50's with wind! Brrrr! Standing around waiting for chow to be served, I casually placed my ungloved hands into my pockets. You would have thought I committed high treason! Those around me parted the seas as the CSM approached. I had no idea what was going on. The CSM was kind though, as he knew I hadn't been to Basic Training. He gently said, "We don't put our hands into our pockets any longer than it takes to put something in or take something out. If you leave your hands in your pockets it looks like you have nothing to do. Put on some gloves if your hands are cold." 'Nuff said! It never happened again in 22 years.
