I have a pretty good history with US Navy history. While stationed at Ft. Lewis I took my family and my mother up to Bellingham and visited the US Missouri. We were allowed to walk the deck and came up to the site where the Japanese signed the surrender to end WWII. As we stood there, reading the memorial plaque attached to the deck, I noticed my mother wiping tears from her eyes. When I asked her why she said she was recalling the time that was announced on the radio. My father was still in Italy, though the war had ended long before. The scuttlebutt around his unit was that they were going to be transferred to the Pacific to help in the fight against the Japanese military. With the surrender, my mother did not have to worry about him being involved in more fighting. 145 days later my father was in Texas and 2 weeks later he was home.
A sad story with a happy ending.
