If you want to read a great book about WWI Marines, check out: Suddenly We Didn't Want to Die: The Memoirs of a WWI Marine by Elton E. Makin. Makin was a Pfc. in 2/5 and fought from Belleau Wood all the way through the night crossing of the Meuse River on the night of 10-11 Nov. 1918. He started out as a rifleman and then became a battalion runner--one of the most dangerous jobs on the battlefield. He was wounded a couple of times (refusing evacuation) and received both the Army DSC and the Navy Cross.
