Exactly Brother, why would they have Live ammo on a Movie Set if the first place? IMHO, they're idiots, that's an accident that finally quit waiting to happen.

Real ammo sounds different than blanks. Additionally, real ammo puts holes in things. Should an ACTOR'S gun have live ammo? Never. But there are valid uses for live ammo in production.

Fairly certain pyrotechnics and sound effect tracks could mitigate holes and sounds

CSM Chuck Stafford How do you get the sound effect for a firearm JUST right without recording the actual firearm firing the actual round?
How do you get the glass of a window shattering as a bullet pierces it JUST right if you don't film a bullet going through glass?
What happened on the set of Rust is a results of negligence and carelessness. Pyro + negligence and carelessness will have equally disastrous results. So will stunts, water, animals, and any number of other hazards that can be found on a movie set - or real life, for that matter.
The problem isn't live ammo, it is careless, negligent idiots using live ammo.
