As a former Marine stationed aboard a carrier, we learned about the Franklin's fight to just survive in damage control school. What the men of that ship did to save her was a miracle. Then to sail her from the far Western Pacific back to Brooklyn Naval Shipyards was a feat in and of itself. The Officer's and men are the stuff of legend.
22 Marine were killed in action that day. The second most lost during the war, next to the USS Arizona's Marine Detachment where 73 Marines were lost on December 7, 1941.
