I agree with the author. Peleliu was unnecessary. The only things it did was provide a glimpse of future Japanese defenses and open an expressway to Heaven for Marines killed there in action.

It also gave E. B. Sledge some great material for his memoir--one of the best ever written by a Marine: "With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa."
