Iowa teens could work longer hours and more jobs, including those formerly off-limits as being hazardous, and serve alcohol under a controversial bill advanced Wednesday by House Republicans.
House Study Bill 134 passed out of the full House Commerce Committee on a party-line vote, with Democrats opposed, clearing a Friday legislative deadline and making it eligible for a House floor vote.
The legislation, among other provisions, would let teens as young as 14 to request a waiver from the directors of the state workforce and education agencies to work as apprentices in factories, mines, construction sites and warehouses, among others, as part of “work-based learning” programs.

How is that "sanity?" You really think 12-13 year old children should be serving alcohol to adults in a bar? That's absolutely the last place a child should be. Before anyone goes there, yeah I know in small towns kids go into bars. My best friend's parents were alcoholics and we constantly were in the bar with them but I really don't think that was the best place for us to be even in small town bars. Even there, things can get out of hand really fast. And having them work construction or other jobs like that - and expect them to go to school? That's ridiculous. How about let kids be kids and enjoy their childhood as long as they can. There's plenty of jobs they can get already we don't need to be waiving child labor laws.
