Chinook salmon fishing off the California coast will be called off until next spring in anticipation that a near-record-low number of fish will return to the state's rivers to spawn.
The recommendation was made by the Pacific Fishery Management Council, a federal commission that oversees West Coast fisheries. It will need to be approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service by May 16.

Such a shame, Salmon are such a good fish for many reasons and is the only fish I got so tired of catching that I had to stop. It was a Catch and Release river so didn't effect the population at all but the Salmon were running hard at that particular time back in 87 I think it was. The water was Crystal clear but at times you could not see the river bed there were so many salmon rushing by. I bet I caught over 30 between 5 and 8 lbs, my arms were spent. It was a day I'll never forget.
