Having been a member of the 101st I can say the Night Flying is pretty dangerous because the Night Vision Goggles have no depth perception so as a pilot flying at speed it becomes much more difficult to avoid a mid air collision. I saw my fair share of a few near misses at dusk or night time. The flip side of the coin is they have no choice but to train with the Night Vision because that is the primary time of activity and advantage the U.S. Army has over an opponent is the night time operations. So it is rather sad to read about these training accidents when they happen. I think they can be avoided somewhat with safety training but not 100% so as your always going to have to train pilots without deep experience in how to fly with night vision goggles.
