This brought back some memories. Back in the 70s when I was flying B-52s this was a pretty common thing for us to do. All of the systems were analog in those days, we had some vacuum tubes as big as beer kegs, so malfunctions were commonplace. When we couldn't accomplish quick fix we would get on the HF radio and/or WWMCCS for a patch back to home to have the experts talk us through repairs.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen I always heard that vacuum tubes were emp proof. Did the ground crews have the test machines for the tubes like the ones I remember that were in stores for us civilians. I remember Dad having a whole mess of tubes for our TV.

We actually had a spares kit aboard the B-52 that contained the most failure prone tubes and a tester.
