I am on the "they're terrible" side of the discussion. Two reasons, parents use them to babysit their kids, it robs both of them time to interact together. Kids don't get to play in make believe games and parents loose what little precious time they have and will have no memories to look back on in the future. second is because of the people who are on them while driving. While I was still riding my motorcycle I had a number of close calls all because the other driver had their nose stuck in one of those. I had a Full Dressed Harley and was danged near as big as a Volkswagen so it wasn't like I was hard to see.

It drives me crazy to watch people walk in parking lots with their heads down and watching their phones and walking into vehicles who are in the lane trying to park or get out. And then there are the drivers on their phones... and the kids who have no idea of how to socially connect in person...I could go on and on...

It is an unhealthy compulsion and not an addiction. Neuroimaging reinforces this distinction.
