Along with this is was suited for a number of roles. It could bomb well, take photographs, shoot rockets, provide there AND BACK escort for bombers. It flew over Japan in the VLR (Very Long Range) squadrons. It was everywhere

So descriptively stated. Not much left except for it to fly underwater. Fantastic plane and incredibly maneuverable.

The original request for the airplane was for an improved P-40, Curtiss Aircraft, the builder, said it could but would take time. North American said we can give you a new design in under 100 days and they did ........ just barely. The Contract was signed on April 30th the first airplane was rolled out minus engine 99 days later. The NA-73 was test flown on October 15th after the delivery of it's engine and extensive ground testing. The early airplanes, while not as advanced as their follow on versions were still far and away better than the P-40 or anything other single engine fighter in the USAAF inventory at the time and it would only get better.
