Good afternoon and Merry Christmas, Rallypoint. Welcome to the December 25th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Geminids and the Mittens." The East and West Mitten Buttes (left and center) are located in Navajo County, Arizona. The third (right) is called Merrick Butte. Today's APOD is a 22-frame composite image captured during the annual peak of the Geminid meteor shower (December 13-14). The bright stars between the Two Mittens are the alpha stars of the constellation Gemini (Pollux and Castor). Each meteor streak appears to originate from an area near these two stars, hence the name of the annual event. If my memory is correct, the bright red light source in the upper right is the Planet Mars.
