IMHO the best solution for heating buildings is to use the heat in the ground for the initial load and make up the difference in Natural Gas. That idea at least has some sense and scientific theory behind it. At a depth of between 20 and 30 feet soil is about 60 or so which make Geothermal heating and A/C attractive.

MSgt Dale Johnson - With how long they keep government buildings around, and the statistics that savings from geothermal will be recouped in around 10 years on the high side ... Geothermal makes absolutely sense!
Notably, there is a push to go to GHPs (Geothermal Heat Pumps) - the referenced article below is from about 23 years ago speaking to the use of GHPs in federal buildings.
