In early October, my alma mater made headlines after it decided to fire chemistry professor Dr. Maitland Jones Jr. after 82 of his students signed a petition noting that his organic chemistry class was “too hard.” The students accused Jones of purposely making the class difficult, citing that their low scores negatively impacted their “well-being,” and their chances of getting into medical school. Instead of evaluating the rigor and substance of Jones’ curriculum, NYU justified its hasty action by noting the class’s unfavorable student reviews. This type of judgment would never pass in the fields of architecture, aerial engineering, or even the food service industry; why is it permissible here?

Lt Col Charlie Brown Given what is happening to the younger generation this comes as no surprise to me. So many kids today have become lazy and just don't want to put out the effort to learn correctly. With medical error not the third leading cause of death, that's scary that they are lowering standards because of students, who we are leaving our lives in their hands, are bitching that school is too hard.

Organic Chemistry is SUPPOSED to be hard. It's the calculus of chemistry. If you were in intro to Chem, sure, whatever.
SMH.
Medicine is medicine. It is science, and science doesn't give a flying fig about your feelings. There is a certain sense of artistry involved, when looking at diagnostics and treatments. But even that artistry is founded in science.
An exceptionally competent doctor with no bedside manner who treats his/her patients like crap will not be liked. But will continue to get business. The most likeable doctor in the world who has nothing but nice things to say to everyone, and refuses to diagnose or test for "black" diseases (like sickle cell, mentioned in the article) because that would be racist is not only going to get drummed out of medicine, they are likely to do so after getting a few folks killed with their incompetence.
Obviously, competence and cultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence is the whole package. But competence MUST be the foundation.

It is supposed to be hard. Both my sister and brother in law are doctors. They worked hard in college and harder in medical school. I don't want a doctor who thinks that working hard is too much to ask.
