Early pilot training during WWI was measured in hours (not days, weeks or months) before they were sent up in combat.

ILLUSTRATIONS: (1) Capt. Renè Fonck in his SPA 103 SPAD XIII. (2) Renè Fonck scores his 3d victory of the day over the Somme front on 9 May 1918. He went on to down three more later that afternoon, giving him a total of six for the day. It was a feat he repeated a little over four months later, on the first day of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
