I heard a lot of these misconceptions when I was a recruiter, why people enlist or not enlist. For some enlistment is a way to better their circumstance, or a means to have some degree of adventure before settling down to the routine of civilian life, or in response to a national call to arms, or like myself a chosen career. When folks question me about my service I'm commonly told, "You must have seen some wild sh*t." Sure, as wild as it gets in Aviation Logistics. There were highs and lows, but all in all, the greatest ride in the park.

There are very few of us compared to the general population and people don't have a clue. I was a recruiter and I heard every reason for joining and every excuse for why not.

My favorite for not enlisting was "the football injury". Often some yahoo would come up and start with how they'd have joined the Corps, but sadly the knee injury they'd suffered in the "big game" kept them sidelined.

I became a school counselor when I left the service. I heard, "how can you work with kids when you are just a rule follower" and "how long did you serve? Are you sure you are emotionally stable? No PTSD?"
