Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the October 23rd edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Milky Way and Zodiacal Light over Australian Pinnacles." The Pinnacles Desert is one of the most popular attractions in Western Australia's Nambung National Park. This APOD was first featured in 2017. Zodiacal light is a faint glow of diffuse sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust within our Solar System. It is best seen in Southern Hemisphere in autumn before sunrise and in spring after sunset.
So you should not be surprised if this image was captured early in the morning of September 2017. Mouse over today's APOD on its homepage and you will see the different features labelled: Milky Way, zodiacal light, Jupiter, Saturn, Spica, Vega, etc. Would you believe someone if they said this was a picture from Planet Earth?
