MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D.
SFC David Reid, M.S, PHR, SHRM-CP, DTM - Correct. They actually started out as the Allison-engine powered A-36 Apache. However, the Allison engine didn't operate well above 15,000 feet, so they tried marrying the aircraft up with a Rolls Royce-Packard Merlin engine. It was a match made in heaven and the plane was redesignated as the P-51B Mustang.
