I think this has to do with policy while in uniform and lack of benefits of staying in past initial contract. The optempo has been insane the last 4 years for the Guard. The major issue with that is that most of that time doesn't count towards anything... I had 63 AD days last year, on top of normal drills and AT, none of which qualify me for any benefits.. yet they sure qualified me for majorly missed opportunities at my civilian career. The manner in which federal and state are using the guard is making personal, family and professional lives a nightmare. Every guadsman knows, we sign up to serve... but when service to your state and country start to cause everything else in your life to go to shit, they walk away.

It also seems to Me often the Guard is overused an many things they should not even have had to do and by both the State and Federal government. At least with the Active duty or Reserve it's only the Federal government You have to worry about. Some Employer's do a lot better job of supporting the guard and Reserve than others seem to do. That support or lack of support certainly is a major factor in retaining both Guard and Reserve people.
