Interesting information. I do fall in the category of having my one living parent live in our home. We choose a multi-generational living scheme and everyone contributes. I've said this before, we have four generations in our home, 11 people total. My grandkids are homeschooled, so being close to schools isn't important to us, other than the fact I drive school bus for one of them. We live 12 miles from the closest small town, which going south, that small town reports a population of 1,800. But if we drive 12 miles northeast, that small town reports a population of 3,500. Our primary care physician is in the 3,500 populated town, but our preferred hospital is about 44 miles to the southeast.
My own opinion, the best place to raise a family is, "in my own home". Doesn't really matter where I live. Some things may be more convenient to access in bigger areas, but we have 39 acres, and our neighbors are really nice, but far enough away, we don't ever hear them.
As most people on this page know, military folks don't plant roots very often or too deep. We adapt, overcome, and improvise on our living environment, and make the most of where we live. I am glad to be on the retirement side of the fence now and can send our family roots a little deeper.
