Protein misfolding and aggregation is the common cause and pathological mechanism of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), PD, and Huntington’s disease (HD). Autophagy can selectively remove abnormally folded proteins via the lysosomal pathway. Thus, pharmacological manipulation of autophagy may have neuroprotective effects in certain neurodegenerative diseases.
