From Private to Major General. Now that's a career! And as a Jew in the heart of the former home of the ideology that wanted him erased from history. It's true, revenge is a dish best served cold.

What an incredible soldier and what a place to serve in Berlin. The Detachment A mission was very interesting and very demanding. Do some reading on Detachment A, it is a VERY entertaining story. Berlin in the Cold War, especially in the 1960's-1980's was a really jumping place, lots of intelligence work ongoing, and a unique social and cultural environment. The West German government wanted to encourage people to live in West Berlin, so they exempted young men living in Berlin from the military draft. That created a strange counter-culture in Berlin. I served there TDY several times, and always enjoyed working in Berlin.
