On 23 August 1963, the first satellite communications ship, USNS Kingsport (T-AG 164) in Lagos, Nigeria, connected President John F. Kennedy (JFK) with Nigerian Prime Minister Balewa who was aboard for the first satellite (Syncom II) relayed telephone conversation between heads of state.
The United States Navy had built the first satellite communications ship, the U.S.N.S. Kingsport with a 53- foot white plastic dome protecting a 30-foot stabilized parabolic antenna. This ship served as a surface-based station for tracking and communications for NASA's Project Syncom. Project Syncom's objective was to demonstrate the technology for synchronous orbit communication satellites. The first Syncom was launched on February 14, 1963.
It was rumored that during this call, JFK was told a fascinating story about a Nigerian Prince.
"I’m a wayward royal coming to you with an incredible investment opportunity. Mr. Sir, he says, did you know you have millions of dollars unclaimed in a Western Union account? I can help you get it out. All he needs is a small cash advance or a bank account number to complete the wire transfer. Then, these unexpected riches are yours."
