It's too bad his health failed him and he served under a racist president. Wilson probably looked for every excuse not to promote him.

A Buffalo Soldier, a Commissioned Officer, facing such racial bias that it discharged him from military service in order to withhold his promotion to BG, is very poor show for the mighty United States of America, the Icon of Democracy. Although BG Charles Young was promoted posthumously in 2022, this promotion was well-deserved much earlier. Can we say that this is better late than never? I don't believe so.
