You have to support all those technical gadgets or they are just paper weights or cannon fodder.

Two Humvees are rolling across the desert. Both run out of juice.
5 gallons of gas gets one going. Takes about 3 minutes.
The other requires hours of charging.

And some people think the electric one is better for the military.

That’s not really what the article is about. It’s about mission command information systems. Some of which are great, some of which suck. We are able to put more information at the point of the fight than any army in history, and we’ve seen significant results specifically in mitigating friendly fire incidents and and increased efficiency in things like calling for fire, passage of lines and logistics support

The downside is all the toys need juice, and the juice is often batteries for the soldier systems. We generate power phenomenally well. But power generation has an EM signature in addition to fuel concerns. Where we suck is capturing the excess that we generate, and that’s really the crux of the article.

The Army has also recently re-emphasized that HQ’s should reduce their footprint/EM as much as possible and run analog MDMP cycles in conjunction with digital. Just like any other change, it’s caused some growing pains.

But as always, as technology improves our abilities improve and im sure we’ll figure it out
