We did two back to back tours in Rota aboard the AS-33 & 34. We get back for a few weeks every two or three years. Last in Nov 2019 just before the Chinese flu hysteria. You love or hate it. We loved it, still love it. Because of SOFA, all facilities are not accessible to retirees, but for nostalgia's sake we always drive around the base. Ever the SMMO, always wonder about repair facilities with the Navy down to one (1) tender. "In Rota, Spain, the Navy relies on one Spanish contractor to maintain the four ships based at that location.” In addition to recruiting in the toilet, repair and maintenance is suffering. Ships need an unbelievable amount of tender loving care.
