I'm with you, sir.

It sucks for them. But we called these folks "unlawful enemy combatants," and tossed them in prison for YEARS without trial - or even charges.

Sauce for the goose.....

If you're referring to Gitmo, it is legal and humane. Unlawful combatant Islamists who want to kill us have ZERO rights and could have all been killed on the battlefield. 734 have been RELEASED, and NONE have been beheaded, executed, blown up, hacked to death, dragged naked and lifeless through the streets, drowned or burned alive. All things our enemies have done to US and/or our allies. There is no moral comparison between Gitmo and how our enemies treat captives. Gitmo is the finest military detention facility on earth. ICRC physicians I worked with there and later in Iraq, told me, "No one does [detention operations] better than the US. Gitmo is a small piece to the big puzzle of how we WIN the Global War on Terror. Tens of thousand of unlawful combatant Islamists who want to kill us were picked up on the battlefield and only just under 800 ever made it to Gitmo.

MAJ Montgomery Granger I was talking about ALL of it. Not just Gitmo.

And we may not have done naked and lifeless through the streets, but we did naked and in piles. We did sleep deprivation, beatings, waterboarding, false flags, blackmail, bribery, threatened to kill family, mock executions, and more.

Additionally, we should never EVER justify our own dishonorable conduct based on the fact that someone else is even less honorable. We are SUPPOSED to have morals which set us above and apart.

And yes, they COULD have been killed on the battlefield. But they weren't. And once we take someone prisoner, we have a responsibility for their health and well-being.

And while I wasn't referencing Gitmo, specifically, you brought it up, so let's talk about Gitmo. Let's talk about how these folks were (and some still are) held without being charged. Held without a trial. Held for months or even YEARS after their ordered release.

Yes, I know, they were unlawful enemy combatants. But the Constitution is not supposed to apply only to citizens. It is supposed to apply to the government. That is the whole point of the danged thing. It lays out how the government will - and will NOT operate. But screw that thing we took and oath to. Fuck it, it doesn't apply to these .... These.... These TERRORISTS. As if that makes a difference.

I have no doubt that the people running Gitmo did a fine job. But the people ABOVE them making the decisions - almost all of them in business suits, not green ones - bent the Constitution over and had their way with it. And yeah, that pisses me off.
